I'm a video game collector - my Sega Genesis classic sold for $240,000 all because of its controvers

NOSTALGIA has made certain products hugely valuable throughout history, but now even 1990s items qualify.

One rare copy of a common video game fetched $240,000 at auction due to its debated details.

The early edition of the initial Sonic the Hedgehog game, released in 1991 by Sega, was sold via auctioneering website Heritage Auctions.

It went with the Sega Genesis console, known as the Sega Mega Drive in much of the world.

This particular copy was valuable thanks to several details on the packaging.

DETAILS

The high-selling collectors item was an early edition of the game.

It’s unclear if this was the earliest edition, however.

There’s debate among collectors about which early edition came first. It all comes down to the address on the package.

On this copy is one early address: P.O. Box 2167, South San Francisco, CA.

Copies with this location listed can be especially valuable due to their age and rarity.

On some other rare copies, however, is a different address: 130 Shoreline Drive, Redwood City, CA.

Though the two California addresses jostle for the title of “original,” both editions are valuable.

The $240,000 copy was extra valuable because of its condition — factory sealed.

“Despite the ubiquitous nature of the title, we rarely see factory sealed early production copies,” the listing on Heritage Auctions’ website says. “The seal for this copy shows light handling, but the game is in excellent condition nevertheless.”

It’s not clear how many early edition Sonic games are out there, waiting to be rediscovered by their owners.

MORE NOSTALGIA ITEMS

Another popular 1990s item has grown valuable to collectors.

Some Furbies are worth thousands of dollars thanks to limited edition designs.

The toy, invented in 1998, is remembered for its animatronics and ability to “learn” English over time.

After initially being discontinued in the early 2000s, the toy was relaunched several times over the years.

Older collectibles can be worth even more.

A vinyl collector recently shared his “must-have” record from the 1950s, which could be worth thousands.
